It is a cloudy autumn afternoon and I find the nice clearing in the woods I have always relaxed in and I sit down, tucking my legs beneath me. The woods were always quiet around this time, save for the twittering birds and the soft rustling of the trees, and I find I can clear my head and get away from reality much easier here with the canopies spreading out above to allow little light into the clearing. Taking a look around, there are a few dark green bushes growing at the bases of the tall trees surrounding me, but nothing growing on them for me to eat. I glance down and spot a few blades of the sweet grass I so fondly remember from my younger years, though I cannot place a name.

When I was much younger, my mother and I would walk along the boundary of the woods and eat any edible plants and fruits we found on the path. She taught me many things about the world around me. That path was barely worn down before the incident. That was when I understood the grief of death. Of course, I did not catch a last glimpse of her face when I ran far away from that terrible, horrible place. Now that I am much older and can take care of myself, I have been wandering deeper into these woods and hoping I have lost the monster that took my mother so swiftly.

The sun is setting quickly, and the clearing grows dark like someone has turned off a light. I turn attentively towards a loud rustling in the foliage to my west. Standing up, I take a tentative step toward the pitch black forest and can barely make out a still, dark figure situated behind a large bush. Having an uneasy feeling about this, I stalk out of the clearing and slowly walk among the woods in hopes that they did not see me. Everything seems to be going well, but I burst into a run when I hear a loud BANG close by. I leap over roots and branches, weaving in and out between the thick trunks. Yet still I can hear the figure giving chase. I look back. They are catching up quickly, a great whoosh as they sweep through leaves with relative ease, casting an eerie light upon the wooded area ahead of me with the light in their head. I feel my heart pounding in my ears as they chase me further out of the woods. Fear takes hold and carries me faster and faster until I can feel no wind upon my face.

Suddenly, a sharp pain engulfs my leg and I trip. Falling on the mossy ground, I turn back and see what had inflicted this large scratch. In the darkness I do not know, but I could see the edge of a sharp object glinting in what little light there was. The figure approaches me, shaking its head with pity in its eyes. I take a closer look as the moon shines brighter. My mother taught me about this creature. A hunter. It closes its eyes, mumbling something, and fires.
